May 11 To Hell's Gate and backCatchy title line, huh?
Well, after some thought, I gave Chris a raise. If you read the last entry, Chris is the kid that mows my lawn for me. I do my best to be fair and ...well....to be fair, I do have a rather big yard. I figure it takes Chris about an hour to mow my lawn. He uses my lawn mower and fuel and he just bags. I'm still responsible for getting rid of the clippings. So instead of the $10 we started at, he asked for $15. I'm paying him around $20. Not bad for a kid who's too young to pay taxes.
Speaking of paying taxes, my 9 year old daughter had been paying income taxes to the USA. She has a few shares in Disney Corporation. Disney automatically deducts witholding tax on the dividend payouts. The amount is small enough to not make it worth the effort for a Canadian to file for a return. Hopefully, the IRS won't come knocking for more.....
My pulled hamstring has me walking around in pain. Doctor says I'm about halfway to becoming fully recovered. Sure is painful. But I noticed the pain has localized now. So that might be a good sign.
Last weekend we went on a drive to Hell's Gate. I did not know there was a reason it was called Hell's Gate other than a catchy name. It seems the Fraser River narrows at that location and the river also deepens creating a venturi effect on the river. The early explorers would come down the Fraser river, the gorge would flip their canoes and everybody would die. Hence they called it Hell's Gate. Going the other direction, Salmon would have a very difficult time getting up the river at hell's Gate as the water was just too fast. So the US and Canada got together and built a number of gates on the rock face side of the river, (a fish ladder if you will) where the fish could divert to and swim up where the water was considerably slowed down. Pretty cool, huh?
Til next time...
