Long lost friends and my midlife crisis.

Last night, I went to a potluck dinner and met up with some friends I haven't seen in over 10 years. Last year, I went to a high school reunion. It was all triggered by a high school buddy tapping me on the back and asking how I've been. I hadn't seen this guy for over 25 years, yet I guess I still look the same. Just as immature as ever. So inspite of my growing old, I'm still the same guy that everybody thought I would become and I still have most of my hair, though some of it is turning an interesting shade of grey. So, I've been thinking about this for awhile and thought I would post a list of names of some of my friends in my lifetime that I remember and sometimes wonder what's become of you. Some of you, I worked with, I went to school with, or just folks I had a good time with and consider good friends. If you read this and you know who I am but your name is not on here, that's great. That means I think we've sort of kept in touch and you've continued to be a blessing in my life. But you can blog on anyways as I always love to chat with my buddies. If you know who I am and definitely know we haven't been in touch, chime in and refresh my memory (alzheimers kicking in). I would like that. If you find your name on this list and won't mind getting back in touch, well here's your chance. So here you are...I'm naming names: Lake Cowichan - 1960's - John Sperling, Dawn Coe(yes the golfer and I know you're married to a Jones), Anne Sharp, Vicky Harvey, Ian Weir, Larry England, Dean Coxen, Shirley Long, Harry Long Port Alberni - 1970 - Pat McKelvey Vancouver - 1971 - Dick Louie, Danny Louie 1971 to present - Perry Smith, Nada Vuksic, Ming Wong, Alvin Mak, Cheryl MacDonald (UBC 1978), Alice Wu (currently in Hong Kong), Alan Lee, Albert Lum (there's two of you by the same name), Ray Bigley, Gary Evans, Linda Craigs (in fact, the whole billing gang at Telus Edmonton), Margot Lee(we seem to only meet at weddings), Jocelyn Hung, Herman Lee, Mark Brown. ...anyways, that's some of you and I know there's others. If you happen to stumble onto this list and find your name (I hope I spelled your names right), I hope you're doing well.

What happened to HB pencils?

Wow!   We're half way through August!  Where has the summer gone?

Because of my injury, I haven't done any golfing this year.  My clubs are sitting there collecting dust.   Finally, I might be able to get out and do some pitching and putting as the injury has loosened up enough that I seem to have my mobility back.  But I'm still pretty sore at night though.  When the doctor said it would be about 12 to 16 weeks, I had no idea he meant it would get worse for 12 to 16 weeks before it got better.  The summer's almost over.  We did accomplish some goals, however.   My daughter has finally learned to ride a bike.  We can put that hand-me-down bike she has to use now and the next time she gets straight A's in her report card, she would be deserving of a new bike.

Being August, it's time to start looking for school supplies.  Most parents will look at the list from the school and see a request for HB pencils and then go running off to their local school supply shop and buy a load of HB #2 pencils.  Then the teachers complain that the students don't write dark enough.  So what has happened to HB pencils?   They're nowhere to be found.  Anybody who happen to stumble on this blog can reply and help.....Oh...by the ways, we found a stash of HB pencils at a local dollar store.  Nowhere else.  We even went to a foreign country to look for HB pencils and didn't find any.  They're all HB #2 pencils.

Last Friday, we drove our MINI to Seattle Washington for Puget Sound MINIs (PSMINIs) 2nd annual all MINI/mini show n shine.  It was a great time meeting up with other MINI/mini owners and admire and talk cars with each other.   I commend PSMINI and their sponsor for throwing a great do the last two years in a row.  Even more to my liking was a similar MINI to mine won a prize for best paint color.  I never thought purple, and a stock color at that,  would win a prize.  But in Washington State, Purple Haze or Black-Eye Purple is extremely rare and I heard lots of comments from people about how they liked the way the car changes color depending on how the sun hits it.   Another thing about my MINI, I drove from Vancouver to Seattle and back and used only a half a tank of gas.  I drove extremely conservatively (no speeding or jack rabbit starts) and used the cruise control as much as possible.  I drove below the speed limit the whole trip at about 65mph. The drive would have been boring if not for Velveteen-MINI tagging along and keeping us company.  Given the distance traveled and the usage of only 1/2 a tank of gas, the MINI Cooper S clocks in at somewhere between 45 and 50 miles per gallon.  Of course, if driven more aggressively like I normally drive, that mileage might normally be around 35 miles per gallon.  But it was nice to know and prove I could get extremely good gas mileage if some due diligence was paid to my driving style.  I've added a small gallery of pictures from the show n shine to this site.  I've also sent copies to MC2 magazine in much higher resolution with the possibility that they get published.

Time to put my money where my mouth is.   I've had lots of friends and family leave due to cancer and I miss them dearly.   This month, there's lots of walks, runs, cyclathons and other fund-raisers going on to raise money towards cancer research.  There is no shortage of charities and good causes that need any money they can get.  But my priority would be to my church and then cancer research.  Even then, I can't possibly help all who ask.  But if they call by phone at dinner time, the answer is no.

Special congratulations to Jovita Uy and Henry Villacrusis.  They're getting married next week.
